For consumer photography, image processing converts electrical values from the sensor array into an image that can be rendered on a display. The critical image processing algorithms interpolate the sensor data (demosaic), manage color (sensor conversion, illuminant correction), and reduce noise.

In other applications, such as medical imaging and autonomous vehicle control, the sensor data can be provided to advanced algorithms, including machine-learning.

ISET provides Matlab source code so that the user can both modify existing image processing algorithms and insert proprietary algorithms in the pipeline and evaluate how these algorithms perform under different imaging conditions with with different types of sensors.
